Publich Intimacy – exhibition with Sophia Hirsch at the Museum of Jewish Montreal
Our installation in the
Museum of Jewish Montreal explores the relation between the public and the private sphere. Curtains that
Sophia Hirsch and I collected in different places in Germany are hung as a maze, inviting visitors to move through our installation, to draw the curtains or pull them open.
Alongside the main installation we show a series of photos.
The main inspiration for the work came from (recent) events of German history and the involvement or non involvement of large parts of the population in these. Besides the victims and the perpetrators of violent events there are always the bystanders. People who look the other way or hide behind their curtains. What is their role and their impact on the course of history?
Realized with great support of Alyssa Stokvia-Hauer, Austin Henderson, Zev Moses, Pippa Bartlet, Gautier Berlemont, Anya Kowalchuk, and Shopdogs Montreal.
Thanks a lot to Conseil des Arts de Montreal, German Embassy in Montreal, to Mathieu Robinson and Goethe Institut Montreal.
Photos by Gabi Opas and me.
