Dérive - Artmossphere Biennale, Moscow, 2018

‚Dériver‘ is the French word for ‚to drift‘. The artists group Situationists International used this term to name their approach dealing with the urban environment.

One of the basic situationist practices is the dérive, a technique of rapid passage through varied ambiences. Dérives involve playful-constructive behavior and awareness of psychogeographical effects, and are thus quite different from the classic notions of journey or stroll.

In a dérive one or more persons during a certain period drop their relations, their work and leisure activities, and all their other usual motives for movement and action, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there. Chance is a less important factor in this activity than one might think: from a dérive point of view cities have psychogeographical contours, with constant currents, fixed points and vortexes that strongly discourage entry into or exit from certain zones.

My installation offers the athmosphere to contemplate, to reconsider – and to reflect the context of a work, in the spirit of the Situationists International

It consists of a room with two opposing sides. One showing three projections of traffic situations, a distant view on the world, an endless loop of space to contemplate.

The other side picks up the idea of Dérive and adds more questions. It reflects on the influence of the online life opposing to the offline world as source for inspiration and differentation and asks for the importance of the context of a work.

The central piece is a screen showing the latest uploads on instagram, sourrounded by paintings on glass, shiny objects, between painting and screen.

Questions for me
What does the context and environment do to a work?
Will people get driven into the projection?
How does the environment influence the development of ideas and creation of art?
How does the appearance change with a randomly chosen image next to my painting?
Will the projection raise ideas, open perspectives, change perspectives?
How do the works react on each other, communicate to each other?
